I recently partnered with the Academy of Cosmetic Arts & Sciences (ACAS) of Boca Raton to put my clay art dresses, from the Ladies' Dress Series, on live models. The following video is a result. This particular edit of the video features the work of the students and the school. This exceptional video is the work of Michael LaFrance. It is with excitement that I look forward to receiving the edit that will focus on my efforts and the Ladies' Dress Series. In the meantime I know you will enjoy this:
Special to The Miami Herald Posted on Thursday, 03.17.11
Three artists contribute to Unexpected Abstractions, on view now through March 25 at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines.
The pencil drawings of Tere Pastoriza and the architectural constructions of David McLeish are on display, with the main gallery and adjacent hallway devoted to the work of Fort Lauderdale’s Steven Sylvester.
His mixed media dresses and female torsos celebrate the variety of roles taken by women, from ballerina to gardener to sex kitten. Collectively, these fun, often flirty works make one marvel at how they were put together and who might be brave enough to wear them down the red carpet.
With some pieces free standing and others hung on the wall, the collection represents the artist’s body of work over several years. By taking clay off a pedestal, its traditional place, and hanging it on the wall like a painting, Sylvester elevates it to like status.

Unveiling of this 4 foot by 7 foot architectural ceramics wall mural occurred at the celebration of ArtServe's 20th Anniversary August 20, 2009 at the ArtServe building, 1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where it is permanently installed in the lobby. This fired clay art represents music, film, theatre, literay arts, dance and the visual arts. It was constructed with open studio time, open to the public who could view the progressive construction of this form of art.
Funding for the 12 open studio sessions and accompanying 12 lectures was provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
Steven Sylvester teaches "How to Build Architectural Ceramics" via a dynamic PowerPoint presentation made from his actual studio process. This presentation covers:
• Foundation slab construction • Substructures built in-place • Sculpting and refining • Segmentation based on design bias
"Mr. Sylvester is an acclaimed contemporary clay artist driven by an appreciation for uncommon uses of materials. His current work-in-progress series of life size women’s dresses made from clay and wire amplify his desire to transform ordinary objects into something remarkable. In conjunction with the series of dresses on display at Studio 18, Mr. Sylvester will present the work of his impassioned project Help Me Build a Home of My Own. Hand built homes created by children aged out of the foster care system will be on display for the duration of the exhibit. Proceeds from the sale of the houses will be donated to the foundation Sculpting Lives."
